    Default MCU Saul, Gloucestershire

As a 14 year old in 1944 I used to swim in the Gloucester -Sharpness canal at Saul Junction, 8 miles south of Gloucester.
There were a large number of A/S rescue craft stored at the junction and on the Stroudwater canal with a maintenance facility in the Wycliffe College boathouse.
There were 2 wooden barrack huts to the south of the boathouse to accommodate the RAF.
The launches all vanished at about the time of D-Day.

Presumably the boats were taken up the canals to Framilode and down the Severn to the sea. IS the Wycliffe Boathouse still standing?

Hi PETERTHEATER, No the launches were too large for the locks on the Stroudwater link to Framilode. They went out the way they came in, via the main canal to Sharpness and thence into the Bristol channel. The only part of the Stroudwater canal that they used was the first 800 yards to the East of Saul junction as far as the Whitminster road.
The boathouse is certainly still there and used daily by the college pupils. The dry dock that was sometimes used for the marine craft is still in use in the thriving boatyard on the opposite side of the canal to the boathouse.
Aside from the historical interest, Saul junction is a fascinating place to visit and I often walk my dog along the towpath on a Sunday afternoon. There is a brand new marina catering mainly for canal boats as well as a cafe and plenty of parking.
I believe that there is a link to the Marine Craft Unit that was at Lower Lode, 1 mile to the south of Tewkesbury but I have no first hand knowledge of the latter (too far for a 14 year old to cycle on his single speed bike) Google Earth covers the junction very well, with pictures.

Hi -PETERTHEEATER I will try to attach some photos that I took of the MCU site today. It has changed very little since the summer of 1944 except that the 2 huts have been demolished and it was a bit too cold to swim !!!
The boathouse with the office on top is almost exactly as it was, the blockhouse (in the foreground) is still there but the 2 wooden huts were demolished shortly after the war to make room for a car park.

Splendid! Thanks Ray. What's with the tower crane (Image 2) opposite? New high-rise?

I first came across Saul during my research into Stoke Orchard. It was assigned as Saul's "parent station" where orders, etc. were received.
