Tried to get there Paul, but failed miserably! It looks like a very good memorial plaque. I am still trying to figure out what was the truth behind the crash. A mid-air with a B-17 or a B-26, or a straight forward multi engine failure?. I have heard so many versions now that the truth is confusing.

There is a time and place for re-enactors. Sorry, but in my humble opinion this wasnt one of them. I think they appear to be disrespectful of the circumstances.

Shame that you couldn't make it Denis, though you wouldn't have missed the cold !! Yes it is a very nice memorial just hope it stays that way. The two flags are only lodged-in behind and as I was the last to leave I just hope that someone in authority retrieves them before they get nicked. According to Roger Freemans Mighty Eighth War Diary a B17 from the 398th BG [Nuthampstead] collided with the B24 there being no survivors from either aircraft.

Hello Dennis, it's a shame you couldn't make it. It was a very fitting tribute to the lost airmen and to Ernie Havis. We were invited to attend with our Jeeps and after a 1.5 hour journey in driving rain, we felt priviledged to be there to honour these young men. We are not re enactors. We have already built one memorial to a lost B24 crew and are in the process of building a second memorial for another B24 crew. We very much respect those people who gave their lives to protect our country. Actions speak louder than words.

My memory may be adrift on this but isn't there a plaque at the Cambridge American Cemetery to this crew. On a wall just inside the entrance, I think.

Hi Dave, That IS the the one shown. I photographed this about 20 years ago. We thought it a bit strange at the time why this plaque was here rather than at Cheshunt.

I'm a bit confused - is the plaque still at Madingley or has it been moved to Cheshunt?

This is the plaque at Madingley:

There are two plaques, the original is at the Cheshunt Library and the second plaque at Madingley.
