Took a bimble around St Mary's Church Wickambreaux today and was somewhat dismayed to find this plaque. It is unamed, and a search within the churchyard and church revealed nothing. The plaque seemed to be abandoned. Anyone know any more?

Squadron Leader David John Hatfeild Maltby DSO DFC , killed 14-15 September 1943 , 617 Squadron , Lancaster JA981/KC-J . On Ops to Dortmund-Ems Kanal carrying a 12,000lb'er when recalled but crashed off Cromer coast killing all 8 crew members of which 7 had made the last attack on the Mohne Dam .

Ah! David I am maybe a bit demented, there was a VR pilot CWGC headstone nearby but I dismissed it as the date was over a month out. I failed to photograph it.

The CWGC website confirms that Maltby is buried at St Andrews, Wickambreux,

Have just re-read your post, Paul, and note that you refer to the church as St Mary's. Are you sure of the name, as only St Andrew's is listed for Wickambreux?

Am sure its St Marys unless I am completely lost my mind (which is possible)
