Flight say a PR9 and an RB-57F. Could it have been a PR3 uprated to 9 standard?
If flight say a 9 then a 9 it was, I was assuming that as the RAE met reseach flight used a 3 it was a 3.
Its all about antecedents. I shall quote from my copy of 'Tengah Times' Vol iv No 11 of November 1968 in reference to WH793:
"The Canberra...........started its life as an early PR7, then later, different wings, more powerful engines, & powered controls were fitted and it became the prototype PR9."
WH793 went to RAE Bedford in 1961. It owes its lineage to the first Canberra PR version which was the PR3, but those that survived were upped to PR7 Standard. Apart from this one, & bear in mind my comments about Canberras on another thread - 'Guess the aIrcraft' -, all the PR9s were essentially a different aircraft, being built by Shorts in Belfast, who were its Delegated Engineering Authority, as opposed to EE & their successors for all the others.

Also Fighters use the ASCOT callsign when on deployments ASCOT 9500-9999 normally accompanied by ASCOT 9200-9299 VC 10/Tristar
They only use the ASCOT prefix when with the tanker.
Heres a few for RAF/ARMY/RN aircraft
AAC Army air corp
BDN Boscombe Down
BWY Culdrose
COT Cottesmore
CWL Cranwell
ETP Boscombe Down
KRF Northolt
LCS Leuchars
LOP Linton on ouse
LOS Lossiemouth
MRH marham
RFR Rafair various
SHF Support helo force
VLL/VYT Valley

normaly with 2 to 3 numbers after the callsign
Theyre the trigraphs used for the RT and the callsigns are a bit different to the trigraph. For instance the helicopter force use VORTEX, Warton uses Tarnish, Wittering uses Striker and Northolt uses KITTYHAWK.
