Default Breaking News! - Listed Buildings in the Orkney Islands

ARG had advised Historic Scotland on the importance of certain WWII buildings at Twatt airfield on Orkney

The following designations have now (15-07-11) been added to the Statutory List:

    Five Air-Raid Shelters Cat C

    Two pillboxes Cat C

Combined Control Tower and Operations Room Cat B

Extremely good news, and quite a few 'brownie' points gained for the ARG no doubt!

Hi Paul, good news indeed. For the uninformed amongst us could you list what the different designations/categories are?

    Best wishes

    Pete

Thanks each,I dont know why I never mentioned this before (peraps I did), but we also advised on the following at RAF Leuchars:

WWI GS Flight Sheds Cat A
    Sergeants' Mess Cat B
    Control Tower Cat C
    Squash Court Cat C
    Officers Mess Cat C

    All designated on 08-02-10

I must also point out that we failed to get anything listed at Sealand (hense the recent demolition)

Scottish Listing categories (pinched from the Historic Scotlad Web Site)

Buildings are assigned to one of three categories according to their relative importance. All listed buildings receive equal legal protection, and protection applies equally to the interior and exterior of all listed buildings regardless of category.

    Category A
Buildings of national or international importance, either architectural or historic, or fine little-altered examples of some particular period, style or building type. (Approximately 8% of the total).

    Category B
Buildings of regional or more than local importance, or major examples of some particular period, style or building type which may have been altered. (Approximately 51% of the total).

    Category C(S)
Buildings of local importance, lesser examples of any period, style, or building type, as originally constructed or moderately altered; and simple traditional buildings which group well with others in categories A and B. (Approximately 41% of the total)

Two additional categories existed until recently, Category C (non – statutory) and B for Group (statutory). These have now been phased out entirely.

Thanks for that Paul, as the title is 'Scottish Listing Categories', does that mean a similar building elsewhere in the UK could/does fall into a different category?
