    Default Dining Rooms

An extra-large type of Dining Room seems to have been built at the USAAF Strategic Air Depots, usually in 30' span Nissen (Alconbury/Abbot's Ripton, Honington/Troston, Wattisham/Hitcham and Watton/Neaton), the one at Snetterton Heath/Eccles appears to have been of Seco construction.

To show the relative size, here's one alongside a standard Nissen Dining Hall 12772/41.
Each dining wing of the 12772/41 is 126' long, whereas the extra-large version had 228' long wings:

Does anyone know of any more examples, or even the drawing number(s)?

    All the best,
    PB

Just spotted another one (Nissen) that stood in what became the Fire Service Training School at Stansted, now lost under the current terminal area.
Better check the other Tactical Air Depots too, just in case.

Nothing at the other TADs that I can see, but they weren't built to the same layout as Stansted and the 8AF SADs.
Site No.2 at 1BAD Burtonwood had one though.

The 1943 build communal site at the AAD Site, Stansted was built almost entirly of Uni-Seco huts except for a the Nissen post exchange (3930/43). The Dining Room for 3011 (?) (4639/43), Institute for 3000 (3712/43), Ration Store (3713/43), Airmen's Recreation Room 2057/43 and Bomb Site Maintenance Block (?) (3713/43). the other minor buildings are all to 3715/43 such as Ablutions and Latrines. I will check the airfield domestic site in a mo.

Stansted's airfield Mess Site No.1 has Nissen hut for 800 plus a preparation room extension 12772/41 and 5439/43. In fact the majority of buildings on this site are Nissen.

Alconbury's airfield domestic sites had two dining rooms, one on Communal Site 'A' which is the original communal site Dining Room (TB) for 540 (15901/40) mostly buildings on this site are TB. The other on Communal Site 'B' which is the later site Dining Room for 1000 Nissen hut 12772/41 and this site is a mixture of Nissen and TB. Not sure yet about the AAD site.

We can see already from the above that the size of dining rooms between airfields varies considerably from a 1940-design satellite site having a dining room for 540 to one designed for a combined airfield / AAD in 1943 with a massive 800 man plus another for 3000. Two large dining rooms on the same airfield (abiet different sites).

I notice that these buildings were on units occupied by the American forces. The Americans dont have the three mess system, unlike the British, so everyone on an American base will eat in the same dining hall.

Unfortunately, the plan I have of Abbots Ripton is not annotated so cant comment on the Alconbury's AAD .
