Default BARAGE BALLOON DEPOT - Falmouth

This building was apparently the RAF control centre for the 10 barrage balloon sites that protected Falmouth during World War Two. It was called the Pendower but is now part of the Melvill Court complex of appartments in Sea View Road.

My above post in 2011 was based on information obtained from the Peter Hancock book "Cornwall at War". However 959 Squadron, the RAF Squadron that operated Falmouth's balloon barrage from 1940-1944, show in their records that Squadron HQ was at the Gwendra Hotel on Cliff Road.

The left hand photo is an advert for the hotel from a 1933 town guide. The right hand photo shows the building that currently stands on the site.

Phil ~ I heard from a worker who had been at the Holmlea Hotel during this time that once the American's had moved into Falmouth that seniority had resulted in various units being ' shuffled ' between different locations.

Is it possible that they could have been allocated to different hotels during 1940 to 1945

    Dave.

Dave, as far as the Squadron HQ is concerned no. The RAF records show that it stayed at the Gwendra throughout 959 Sqn's stay in Falmouth.
As far as A Flight's HQ, yes that moved from Stratton House & 9 Tehidy Terrace to the Riviera Hotel so the Americans at Greenbank could utilise those nearby properties.
B Flight's HQ moved from Harrogate House in Queen Mary Road to Markee, a house round the corner in Spernen Wyn Road but the RAF retained Harrogate using it as additional accommodation.
C Flight HQ was at Penmorva, a large house out near Budock.
