Looks like they've aready made a start -

It was 'quite bracing' to say the least this afternoon at Witham but as enjoyable as ever.
Heres a few more snaps -

This time of the year is defitnetly the best time for a decent view of the old signal square -

Excellent little book that. Well worth hunting down.

I was back up at North Witham once again last sunday (20/2/11) with WiganMick59. We concentrated more on looking over some of the dispersed sites on this perticular visit. Not a lot to find anywhere though. I thought i'd post a few pics of our finds as these haven't already been featured by me or anybody else during this thread so far -

    Sewage Site-

    Communial Site No.5 -

Plenty of hut bases on and around the airfield. Sadly little in the way of complete buildings

..and it'd be rude not to include a tower piccy obviously!! -

That's the first IM plinth I've seen, kebecker. I suspect most were removed as they were very small and needed only a a thin concrete hardstanding in comparison with the requirements of the Main Beacon. There should be some wires protruding from the ground somewhere. The 10 watt transmitter was housed in a small 'dog kennel' with the aerial mounted above. Generally the plinth would be covered with chicken wire.

An Air Ministry memo from HQ 42 Group, dated 18 June 1955, states that 93MSU North Witham must be cleared of explosives by 31 March 1956. Requisitioning will end on 31 December of that year and the site will be returned to the owners, as the AM do not wish to purchase the land. The reason for clearance was that open cast mining will commence on the site in 1957. Source: AIR 17/68.

The bore hole records elsewhere in the forum would support the rationale for this. Interestingly large scale open cast iron ore mining never took place on the east side of the Great North Road, there was a drift mine at Easton that was in production for a few years. I can only assume the ore bearing strata went deep in an easterly direction

This article mentions iron ore extraction in and around the area:
