Exning Hall

Hi gents,

Looking for a photograph of No.3 Groups HQ, Exning Hall.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction. I was there only on Friday 24th but could not gain access to get a head on view. Any help much appreciated.

Exning House (not Hall) was the Officers Mess and acom for the AVM. HQ was at Harraton House the other side of the village in what was Lord Durhams racing residence (Newmarket). No photographs exist but it is now a range of private dwellings. The telephone exchange constructed for 3group remains as the village BT auto exchange to date. If I can help with further info please contact me.

This is Exning House, not hall. Yes it was converted to apartments about 14 years ago. The RAF left in 1946/7 and the house became a county council home for the elderly in the fifties until the mid ninety's when the original owner sold it for re-development.

There is no record of an Exning Hall - just Exning House

Thats right. Many refer incorrectly to the house being the HQ. Harraton House is/was a quarter of a mile away

It certainly is confusing; there are a lot of Google links to Exning HALL, particularly from BBC, Cambridgeshire Archives and other supposedly! trustworthy sources. However there are many many more links to Exning HOUSE. There are also mentions of Exning PLACE, Exning COURT and Exning MANOR.

The Air Ministry called it Exning HALL, LINK, but we know they didn't always get it right, e.g. Spitalgate and Church Stanton.
