Default FILEY - Blackburn Aeroplane Company Memorial

This month's Aerospace magazine (the Royal Aeronautical Society's rag) has a piece on a new memorial unveiled on 27 January 2012 on the seafront, near the children's paddling pool. It commemorates the centenary of the opening of Robert Blackburn's Flying School using the sands as his airstrip. This was the first step towards the Blackburn Aeroplane Company. The article states that nearby is a sculpture of a Blackburn Mercury aircraft (one of his first types), along with an information panel. Any photos would be welcome for AiX.

In related news, the feature also states that Blackburn's original hangar was found being used on an industrial estate at Hunmanby and the parts have now been moved to the Yorkshire Air Museum for preservation.

This information may help anyone researching in to the Blackburn aircraft company when it operated from Filey Sands.

For background & photographs please read Ces Mowthorpe's excellent website.
    http://www.hunmanby.com/fileysands.html

'Primrose Valley' is now largely covered with static caravans however (thankfully) the ground that had the company's bungalow and hanger is largely untouched, its called the Hamlet of Flat Cliffs and borders on to the wide flat beach of Filey Sands (Hunmanby Sands).
GE locations for the two buildings are:

    Blackburn's hanger : http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=54.18....7&r=0&src=msa (OS TA 12360/78362)
    Blackburns's cottage : http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=54.18....5&r=0&src=msa (OS TA 12315/78325)

I haven't been to the site recently and I'm led to believe the bungalow was demolished not so long ago, the site of the hanger is also occupied by two houses, the hanger was moved to nearby Hunmanby.

The building I always suspected was the old hanger : http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=54.17....7&r=0&src=msa
(the building can still be seen in situe on GE at lat 54.173537 - lon 0.293106 or TA10162/76650 OS)

You can also see in FE/GE the remains of the slipway on to Hunmanby Sands from the hanger...
