I find it a shame that theres absolutley nothing here to tell people that this was once a very busy and important airfield and of course home to the Auster.
I think the majority of people pass the site without giving it a second glance to be honest.
A few photos of the remains of Rearsby airfield in Leicestershire. Famous for the production of Austers, the factory units still stand and are used by local businesses. The flying field can be discerned but now hosts crops instead of aircraft.
The Auster (and others) assembly buildings.
The flying field.

Sadly, I think thats like most places though StevieI think the majority of people pass the site without giving it a second glance to be honest.
To true Rich i'm afraid.
At least the buildings are all still standing at Rearsby though which is something i suppose! With the exception of the old club house which was a wooden pavillion type building.
If anyone is interested Dave Molyneaux and myself created a "stand well off" version of Rearsby the way we hoped it looked in the early 50s for MSFS9.
If anyone has photos of that period we will be happy to update the current
computer model.
By the way -- David is busy creating Austers for flight simulator they are
superb to fly. (We have access to the kind folks at Eggesford and their collection of real world Austers).
Cheers

Do you have any screen shots Leif? Be great to see them if you do.
Here you REF
Remember we couldnt find any period photgraphs of Rearsby so alot of assumption was used.
I doubt wether Auster ever got as ambitous as having a marked runway or taxiway just typical WW2 large grass field where one took off into the prevailing wind. but it was added to allow for the vagaries of FS9 AI traffic.
and just for grins here is a screenie of David Molyneaux's Auster Alpine
painted by Peter Watkins - it flies as good as it looks

They look good Leif, thanks for that. Others may be able to help with the historical accuracy as I've not yet been to Rearsby
Cheers Ref
Thats what I was hoping for.....thats why I registered
We will pick anyones minds and take as much information as we can get.
The guys who make the Austers are incredible and of course what I did
not mention is that everything thats offered at www.classicbritishfiles.com
is freeware -- given as gifts to the Flight sim community for the love of history
and flying. I hope that doesnt sound too mundane.

Hi Dragon.
Heres a pic of Rearsby for you. Unfortunatly it doesn' show much of the actual runways area.
Your building lay-out in your version is pretty close to the real thing give or take a few more buildings except that the factory buildings to the far right are actually exactly behind the others but still over the road. Sorry if that doesn't make a lot of sense. The lay-out today still hasn't changed that much today to be honest. -

(You'll have to scroll across the page for the airfield to come into view on the link above.)
You were right about there being no runways...just a big grass strip with three wind socks, a landing circle and a small watch tower. Unfortunatly i haven't got an aerial photo to post up although im sure somebody on here may have.
Anyway hope this helps mate.
