[QUOTE=SNAFU;102197] Myself & Mrs S will be arriving at nearby Mavis Enderby for a week's R&R on the 9th June.

So will you be booking into the B+B as Mr and Mrs SNAFU.

No need to book in as it's our regular haunt when we're 'doing' the Lincs airfields. A quick wink to the proprietor and all is understood. Fnar, Fnar.

Actually Mrs SNAFU is a good egg - she's very interested in Bomber airfields & WW2 history as her uncle was a 100 Sqn navigator and was lost in 1944.

Perhaps we might see you there at Spilsby ?

    Best wishes, John

    Oohh Beware!
Douglas Adams used the name "Mavis Enderby" in his spoof The Meaning of Liff dictionary "of things that there aren't any words for yet".
Adams assigned meanings to placenames based on what he imagined them to mean, Mavis Enderby becoming:
"The almost-completely-forgotten girlfriend from your distant past for whom your wife has a completely irrational jealousy and hatred".

Oh Lordy. And there I was thinking it would be a quiet week with just a mug of chocolate and a good book.

Now it seems there will be a Lancaster flypast and a showdown with SWMBO. (Good job I've never visited that "Friends Reunited" site then!)

    Better pack the camera...and plasters.

or you could go instead to the outskirts of Swindon:

LYDIARD TREGOZE (n.) The opposite of a mavis enderby (q.v.) An unrequited early love of your life who still causes terrible pangs though she inexplicably married a telephone engineer.

Final Update Re: Dedication.... Saturday 9th June 2012, 'Air Force Road, Monksthorpe, Nr. Spilsby. The BBMF Lancaster is scheduled to 'Fly Past' at 12.25pm (subject to weather and other operational commitments). The dedication service will be conducted thereafter (12.45pm - approx).
There has been an incredible response with in excess of 230 invited guests with 207 Squadron ties attending. Pleasingly, there will be at least 14 207 Sq. Raf Spilsby veterans also in attendance.
The memorial site is quite small in area and therefore special arrangements have been made to accommodate those invited with seating near/around the memorial. There will be a 'PA' system in operation so hopefully others will be able to hear the service.
Anyone attending the Dedication/Fly Past should be aware that there will be temporary road closures (12 - 2pm) for safety reasons in the immediate area so direct access to the memorial site will be very controlled.
The best viewing area for photo shots of the Fly Past would be the unclassified road that runs across the former airfield (again this will be subject to possible access restrictions) but if you travel from the Candlesby direction you should be able to get close to this area to park up (near where the remaining hangar is located).
If I can answer any further questions regarding local access I will do my best.

    Regards,
    Mark

Thanks John - hope you and Mrs. SNAFU have a good stay in the County.
As stated the number of invited 207 Squadron guests attending has far exceeded organisers expectations and with the mere mention of the Lanc also in attendance (weather permitting) this will swell numbers even further. It will be busy.
Personally, I favour the area for viewing/photography as previously mentioned. Come off the A158 at Candlesby - take the road opposite the Royal Oak Pub and follow it to the said area. Trees/bushes are now in full leaf near the memorial site and will so prevent good shots of the low flying Lancaster.
Please bear in mind the temporary road closures and diversions as implemented by the Police on the day - bound to upset a few people no doubt but this is a 'one off' event so patience will be necessary. Heres hoping for a good day in all senses of the word.

    Regards
    Mark

20.00 hrs: BBMF website now timing the Lanc at Great Steeping for 16.00 hrs, not as previously announced. There has been a major rejig of the programme due to the expected high winds earlier in the day.
