    Default Bawtry Hall, South Yorks.

The first photograph of the hall was taken about 1997-8. The last two were taken in 1987-8. While there they were just demolishing the Briefing room , all the electric was off, just the workmens gas lights on . It was a dark wet cloudy day and dust was everywhere. But they told me to take some photographs before they got on with it. As i had no flash-gun with me i could do nothing !! So had a quick look around , stood up on the platform by the large board then went outside to photograph the compass that they told me of engraved in the main step. The rain started just then..... typical !!!

I think im correct in saying that throughout its entire RAF career it was HQ 1 group and nothing else.

Round the back the the command room can be seen

Note memorial plaque on the right, which looks like:

The site is a conference centre

They are quite happy for people to view the plaque but ask as a courtesy.

This is the entrance that has the compass cross on the step.

Default Hi Looking for info on Bawtry Hall

    Hi Everyone
My name is Charlie, I am the Facilities Manager at Bawtry Hall and I am trying to build up a history of the Hall during its time with the RAF firstly with Bomber Command (No 1 Group) and then No 1 Strike Command. I know it featured in the Night Bombers film but would welcome any information on the Hall, The Met office, etc I would really welcome copies of any photos of the place or any information on what individual rooms were used for, interesting stories. There seems to be some stories about secret tunnels from the Hall to all over the place - Can anyone help ?

Welcome to AiX. The only place where you can get primary info on 1 Group etc is TNA, at Kew. If you cannot go there yourself I can and the cost will be 10p per digital image of each page of the ORB and other files. I note there are around 8 files that are of primary importance, such as ORBs and those concerning works on site and over 80 of secondary importance dealing with general 1 Group operations (not necessary about Bawtry).

    Hi Charlie

I'm one of the two guys who dropped in on you yesterday. Glad you've found the forum and hope you find it useful, drop me an email regarding the other bits we discussed.

    Cheers

Charlie - How good it is to hear of your efforts to mark Bawtry Hall's history. I remember attending a conference at Danesfield House Hotel (the former RAF Medmenham) a few years back, and could find virtually nothing to indicate its important history other than a single, uncaptioned photo near the reception office. I hope the management there has improved the commemoration, especially since the recent TV documentary about the Allied photo-recce units. Good luck at BH.

Hi sumter, there's quite a bit there now, the plaque that I've posted-up in the memorial thread had been there [somewhere] quite a time, so I was told. It eventually fell off the wall ! So a new one has been re-positioned under an archway outside.
