Padgate was next to a balloon depot and about the size of an airfield but it was not an airfield.
I have an aerial photo of the site, I think, and will post this if I remember.

Here is the promised pic. Balloon Depot top left.

Yes, I suggest that this is relegated to the Non-Airfiields section.

Good to see the photoof the gateway and the aerial view. About 10 years ago I lived a short walk from the gateway. The gateway is still evident but there is very little to show of the training camp or the ballon site (Houghton Green). A few of the officers and constables houses and an occasional piece of concrete is all that is left from the balloon site. The firing range was about the last thing to go.
Padgate was well known to many in the RAF for their first six weeks training ...and for where they went to be demobbed.

The aerial photo shows the balloon site at the top left. The firing range is right on the bottom edge approx a third from the left

(if anyone wants to know what other buildings are I do have the ministry plans)

Re the Pathe clip. It shows Gp Capt Insall VC, evidently the first CO of the station.

Very little about him on the web, not even RAFWEB, but they did name a road in Padgate after him.

Final snippet - Bruce Forsyth trained here !

I have written a small book about my time in the RAF. It includes my time at Padgate, Kirkham and Leconfield. You can access it at www.jamesjamieson.co.uk

Thanks Allan, I read your 'Armourer's Tale' on-line and it brought back many memories.

The photograph of you leaning against a 'Crew Hut' shows the infamous personal tool of the Armourer of the time; a Screwdriver, GS (General Service), Cabinet Handle
