    Default Stanbridge

Not an airfield site, but one fundamental to the RAF's operations over many years.

As is the way of things these days, the place is closing. A ceremony was held yesterday as the RAF Ensign was lowered for the last time (BBC Look East carried a report).

English Heritage have released a report on the site, which can be downloaded:

I went to an airshow there in the 1970's.........I say airshow, it was an F1-11 booked to do a few low passes for their open day one Saturday way back when. Must have been 1978 I think just before I joined up. I can't remember the stations role though?? Anyway, the F1-11 didn't find it but could be heard in the local area. Very sad to hear it's closing.

This was Communication Centre Central. All signals to overseas units went via here. To RAFG by landline, and all points east by HF Radio link. I was in Commcen Gan when RAF Nairobi closed and a direct link to UK was opened.
