The airfield was built in 1941 under a lend lease agreement, Newfoundland was at that time not a part of Canada. The NAS was used to support the US Naval base established at the same time. The US only pulled out in 1994. The airfield is no longer used for general aviation and is not listed n the COPA list. I did see a wiki reference to cadet gliding.
I may be back at the airfield today so will see what else I can find out.
This link gives a breif history of USN and USAAF activity, alas the mueseum refered to has been packed away and is in storage,

Thanks for that, interesting link too. Shame the museum has been packed away too.
the first set of shpts were taken from the ferry, what follows are land based
survey datum point on main runway
close up of lighting supports
lighting equipment pit, the approach lighting looks to be a complex bit of kit

Hi KEB:
Cracking holiday snaps. Did you get to Happy Valley and The Goose?
Excellent stuff kebecker, keep them coming. Love the weapons storage igloo, looks very similar to the ones over here.

Some older pics on this link! You probably have to go through the links page and then find the reference to the Cessna trip!
