ICELAND - Reykjavik

Photos and info received today from Jim Crail

Having just returned from Reykjavik I was able to take this photo of the original 1941 control tower still in situ at the airport. Although it has been replaced by the new control tower and control centre, it has been retained in use as offices. Also, the second photo is of the original hangar which although having a new roof, is of 1941 vintage and still in daily use by Eagle Air Iceland.

Looking at this prompted me to look at Iceland on GE.

Immediately I have a few questions.

1:What is/was the airfield ,. now disused , about 1.5 miles SE of Keflavik?
2: What was the original runway layout at KEF?Was it the area now to the east of the terminal area?
3:About 3 miles ENE of the KEF terminal area, right on the coast by a small harbour is what appears to be the remnants of a small airfield...is it so, if so what was it's history?

There are various other features in the area the look rather airstrip-like ..eg: about 2.75 miles NNE is what appear to be a gravel or grass strips.

Has anyone ever produced a history of the KEF area?

So, it seems that nobody has anything to say about KEF and it's surroundings. A pity as it looks interesting on GE.

Keflavik appears to be called Meeks, along with a close neighbour, Patterson!

31 Aug 1943 The Hangar at Kaldaðarnes had been dismantled and re-erected west of Keflavik airfield.
OC, RAF Kaldaðarnes reported progress by Icelandic workers in dismantling Hangar 2 for re-erection at Camp Geck. 350 RAF personnel on airfield had little work to do. US Army units have left Kaldaðarnes area and nearest unit is at Camp Selfoss.

A few notes from ARG member Alan Baker regarding Reykjavik

When there on business, in 1988, some RAF Nissen huts and other wartime remnants remained not only visible but in use. Reykjavik has grown amazingly over the last few years and all these historical sites have probably been built over. There is, way out of town, a small museum of “Life under (British) Occupation”. From a photo seen, I noted that it is housed in some Nissen huts. As you’ll know, the Iceland Aviation Museum is housed at Akureyri in the far north.
