Yes this is great news for Cornwall and could not be better, hopefully just a start. My excellent source got carried away with the number of jobs, but then he was a marketing man!

I've just scanned a few more slides taken in and around the HAS Site on the 26th June 2003. Six Jaguars and three Tornado F3's were in residence for a couple of weeks.

A cousin of mine used to be a photographer on nimrod aircraft, he told that when he was stationed at st mawgan in the late seventies the nimrod he was attached to was in a hanger having some minor work done on it the crew were inside the aircraft and they picked up a russian submarine underwater approx 15 miles out at sea how true this is i dont know but he had no reason to lie. makes me wonder what those nimrods had in them and what a waste to scrap them!

Unlikely, but not impossible. I guess a sonar bouy could be 15 miles off shore and transmitting to be received on board @ St Mawgan. The kit on board was certainly amazing and very good stuff, ahead of its time. And in keeping with your comment 'what a waste to scrap them' I do wonder what we do know for the role they fulfilled (and that wasn't just sub hunting or ASR)
